‘I can’t imagine reading a better book this year’ Daily Mirror

Tim Marshall’s global bestseller Prisoners of Geography showed how every nation’s choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas and concrete. Since then, the geography hasn’t changed. But the world has.

In this revelatory new book, Marshall explores ten regions that are set to shape global politics in a new age of great-power rivalry: Australia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Greece, Turkey, the Sahel, Ethiopia, Spain and Space. Find out why Europe’s next refugee crisis is closer than it thinks as trouble brews in the Sahel; why the Middle East must look beyond oil and sand to secure its future; why the eastern Mediterranean is one of the most volatile flashpoints of the twenty-first century; and why the Earth’s atmosphere is set to become the world’s next battleground.

Delivered with Marshall’s trademark wit and insight, this is a lucid and gripping exploration of the power of geography to shape humanity’s past, present – and future.

‘Another outstanding guide to the modern world. Marshall is a master at explaining what you need to know and why.’ Peter Frankopan

Georg picks up their trail and charts an organisation so insidious that it seems unstoppable. Hunted by the Odessa’s agents, he learns that a series of recent terrorist atrocities are just the first step on their path to retribution. And their next attack could change the course of history.

‘I am loving Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Maybe my favorite novel I’ve read this year’ John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars

‘To say I love this book is an understatement. It’s a deep psychological mystery about the power of motherhood, the intensity of teenage love, and the danger of perfection. It moved me to tears’ Reese Witherspoon

The brilliant new novel by the author of the New York Times bestseller, Everything I Never Told You.

Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down.

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned – from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principal is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren – an enigmatic artist and single mother- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than just tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the alluring mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past, and a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When the Richardsons’ friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town and puts Mia and Mrs. Richardson on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Mrs. Richardson becomes determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs to her own family – and Mia’s.

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of long-held secrets and the ferocious pull of motherhood-and the danger of believing that planning and following the rules can avert disaster, or heartbreak.

An extract from Chapter 1

Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down. All spring the gossip had been about little Mirabelle McCullough—or, depending which side you were on, May Ling Chow—and now, at last, there was something new and sensational to discuss. A little after noon on that Saturday in May, the shoppers pushing their grocery carts in Heinen’s heard the fire engines wail to life and careen away, toward the duck pond. By a quarter after twelve there were four of them parked in a haphazard red line along Parkland Drive, where all six bedrooms of the Richardson house were ablaze, and everyone within a half mile could see the smoke rising over the trees like a dense black thundercloud.

The fourth book in the Love… Series, featuring the Newmans, that can easily be read as a standalone novel!

***

Sometimes, the hardest part of becoming a success is keeping a straight face…

Jamie & Laura Newman have recently become quite the successful – and mildly wealthy – couple, thanks to the fact they’ve managed to write a series of popular romantic comedies together. This has come as a complete surprise to the hapless pair, and is – needless to say – a turn of events neither is in the slightest bit equipped to deal with.

They get invited to posh events where they feel endlessly out of place, have long lost relatives turn up out of the blue, raise an aspiring diva for a daughter, and go on holiday to exotic places they really have no place being. It’s enough to make anyone crawl under the nearest rock.

If you’re Jamie, you also get to turn 40 – and there’s not a damn thing he can do to stop it. As for Laura, well let’s say that just because you can afford to purchase expensive beauty products, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should.

‘Money can’t buy you happiness’ as the old saying goes. Nor can it stop the Newmans being the Newmans, with all their quirks, eccentricities – and the uncanny ability to embarrass themselves in public at the drop of a hat.

LOVE… AMONG THE STARS is the fourth book by Nick Spalding about Jamie & Laura, and is full of the warts-and-all, laugh out loud comedy you’ve come to know and love.

When Janine and Dougie fell in love they thought it would be for ever.

Fifteen years later their relationship is well and truly over, their daughter Stevie their one remaining connection.

Stevie is on the cusp of adulthood. At sixteen, she’s not quite a child, but not quite grown up: a dangerous age. But it’s only during a birthday celebration in Spain, when she gets too close to one of Dougie’s best friends, that her parents realise just how dangerous.

With friendships shattered and trusts betrayed, Janine and Dougie – brought together in Stevie’s moment of crisis – know they must see beyond the past if they’re to secure their daughter’s future. But even with such a lot at stake, can a relationship with so many complications ever have a future.

My stories are set in England, but often include glamorous locations abroad. They are all about relationships within families, and between friends and lovers, showing what happens when things go unexpectedly wrong (or right) as they so often do! My characters have ups and downs, sometimes experiencing real blows, but I am both a romantic and an optimist so it gives me such joy to find that positive happy ending – keeping you guessing as I go!

For me, reading a good book is like discovering a new best friend. My biggest hope is that my stories might feel like that for you.

Happy reading!

Don’t miss this gloriously feel-good and funny read from the No.1 bestselling author of The Christmas Invitation. Perfect for fans of Cathy Bramley and Katie Fforde

Tying the knot can leave you in a tangle…

James is everything Tish has ever wanted in a husband – he’s handsome, dependable, and will make an excellent father. Unlike Tish’s first love, the disreputable Fergal, who abandoned her for a music career and now lives a lavish celebrity lifestyle. Fergal broke her heart and James helped to mend it.

Tish and James have just bought a cottage in the country. The next step? Kids and a lifetime of domestic bliss. Well, that’s the plan. And even if James has a slight tendency to view the village pub as a second home, their relationship is still in pretty good shape after seven years of marriage … So why is marriage to Mr Right making her long for Mr Wrong?

Escape with this warm and witty read – the perfect pick-me-up!

‘One of the best writers around!’ Katie Fforde

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER March 2023
THE ENCHANTING NEW NOVEL FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE LOST APOTHECARY
‘GLORIOUSLY GOTHIC, DELIGHTFULLY ATMOSPHERIC SLICE OF VICTORIANA’ DAILY MAIL

From the author of the intoxicating bestseller The Lost Apothecary comes an entrancing exploration of the blurred lines between truth and illusion and the grave risks women take to avenge the ones they love.

May mercy be upon the man who finds himself the enemy of a vengeful medium…

1873. At an abandoned château on the outskirts of Paris, a dark séance is about to take place, led by acclaimed spiritualist Vaudeline D’Allaire. Known worldwide for her talent in conjuring the spirits of murder victims to ascertain the identities of the people who killed them, she is highly sought after by widows and investigators alike.

Lenna Wickes has come to Paris to find answers about her sister’s death, but to do so, she must embrace the unknown and overcome her own logic-driven bias against the occult. When Vaudeline is beckoned to England to solve a high-profile murder, Lenna accompanies her as an understudy. But as the women team up with the powerful men of London’s exclusive Séance Society to solve the mystery, they begin to suspect that they are not merely out to solve a crime, but perhaps entangled in one themselves…

A Most Anticipated title by: Good Housekeeping, Washington Post, E! News, Bookpage, CrimeReads, Readers Digest, Popsugar, The EveryGirl, Sunset Magazine and more.

Long before books were mass-produced, scrolls hand copied on reeds pulled from the Nile were the treasures of the ancient world. Emperors and Pharaohs were so determined to possess them that they dispatched emissaries to the edges of the earth to bring them back.

In Papyrus, celebrated classicist Irene Vallejo traces the dramatic history of the book and the fight for its survival. This is the story of the book’s journey from oral tradition to scrolls to codices, and how that transition laid the very foundation of Western culture. And it is a story full of heroic adventures, bloodshed and megalomania – from the battlefields of Alexander the Great and the palaces of Cleopatra to the libraries of war-torn Sarajevo and Oxford.

An international bestseller, Papyrus brings the ancient world to life and celebrates the enduring power of the written word.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2019 WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR.

FROM THE JUDGES:
‘Rick Reilly lets Donald’s Trump relationship with his favourite sport speak for itself. Commander in Cheat is full of astonishing ‘you could not make it up’ detail delivered in full knowledge that nothing revealed would embarrass the President one jot. You will be howling with laughter and gasping in disbelief in equal measure so be careful when reading this fascinating book in public.’

SHORTLISTED FOR THE GENERAL OUTSTANDING SPORTS WRITING AWARD AT THE 2020 TELEGRAPH SPORTS BOOK AWARDS.

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER.

‘An eye-watering account of the president’s abuse of the rules of golf’ Sunday Times

‘Reilly pokes more holes in Trump’s claims than there are sand traps on all his courses combined. It is by turns amusing and alarming’ New Yorker

Donald Trump is running for President . . . again. So what better to explain the madness of it all than one of his favourite sports?

Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump is a fascinating on-the-ground and behind-the-scenes survey of Donald Trump’s ethics deficit on and off the golf course. Renowned sports writer Rick Reilly transports readers onto the greens with President Trump, revealing the absurd ways in which he lies about his feats, and what they can tell us about the way he leads off the course in the most important job in the world.

‘Golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a man.’

Reilly has been with Trump on the fairways, the greens and in the rough, he has seen how the President plays – and it’s not pretty. Based on his personal experiences, and interviews with dozens of golf pros, amateurs, developers, partners, opponents, and even caddies who have first-hand involvement with Trump out on the course, Reilly takes a deep and often hilarious look at how Trump shamelessly cheats at golf, lies about it, sues over it, bullies with it, and profits from it.

‘Somebody should point out that the way Trump does golf is sort of the way he does a presidency, which is to operate as though the rules are for other people.’

From Trump’s ridiculous claim to have won eighteen club championships, to his devious cheating tricks, to his tainted reputation as a golf course tycoon, Commander in Cheat tells you everything you need to know about the man.

‘You could write a book about what Trump’s golf reveals about him. Here it is.’

A Waterstones Paperback of the Year 2022

A New Statesman Book of the Year 2022

‘Fascinating… You’ll learn more about the psychological workings of Nazism by reading this superbly researched chronicle… than you will by reading a shelf of wider-canvas volumes on the rise of Nazism.’ Daily Mail

‘An utterly absorbing insight into the full spectrum of responses from ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.’ The Times

‘Boyd is an outstanding micro-historian.’ iNews
___________
Hidden deep in the Bavarian mountains lies the picturesque village of Oberstdorf – a place where for hundreds of years people lived simple lives while history was made elsewhere.

Yet even this remote idyll could not escape the brutal iron grip of the Nazi regime.

From the author of the Sunday Times bestselling Travellers in the Third Reich comes A Village in the Third Reich: an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Germany under Hitler, shining a light on the lives of ordinary people. Drawing on personal archives, letters, interviews and memoirs, it lays bare their brutality and love; courage and weakness; action, apathy and grief; hope, pain, joy and despair.

Within its pages we encounter people from all walks of life – foresters, priests, farmers and nuns; innkeepers, Nazi officials, veterans and party members; village councillors, mountaineers, socialists, slave labourers, schoolchildren, tourists and aristocrats. We meet the Jews who survived – and those who didn’t; the Nazi mayor who tried to shield those persecuted by the regime; and a blind boy whose life was judged ‘not worth living’.

This is a tale of conflicting loyalties and desires, of shattered dreams – but one in which, ultimately, human resilience triumphs.

These are the stories of ordinary lives at the crossroads of history.
